ДЕВОЧКА, С КОТОРОЙ НИЧЕГО НЕ СЛУЧИТСЯ =The Girl Nothing Happens To Кир Булычев=Kirill Bulychev (пер. Evans) Рассказы о жизни маленькой девочки в XXI веке,=Adventures of 21st-century Alice записанные ее отцом.=— Told by Her Father Вместо предисловия =INSTEAD OF A FOREWORD Завтра Алиса идет в школу. =Tomorrow Alice starts school. =It should be a very interesting day. =From early morning her friends and acquaintances have been calling her on the videophone to wish her a good beginning. Правда, Алиса и сама уже три месяца как никому покоя не дает — рассказывает о своей будущей школе.=But for three months now, Alice herself has talked only of going to school — giving nobody any peace. Марсианин Бус прислал ей какой-то удивительный пенал,=The Martian Buce sent her a really remarkable pencil-box. который пока что никто не смог открыть =which nobody has been able to open, so far — ни я, ни мои сослуживцы,=Not I, nor my colleagues either, среди которых, кстати, было два доктора наук и главный механик зоопарка.=though two of them are Doctors of Science and one the chief engineer of the zoo. Шуша сказал, что пойдет в школу вместе с Алисой и проверит,=Shusha said he would go to school with Alice and ascertain достаточно ли опытная учительница ей достанется.=whether her teacher is sufficiently experienced and worthy of my daughter. =A surprising amount of fuss. По-моему, когда я уходил в первый раз в школу,=When I went to school for the first time, никто не поднимал такого шума.=I can’t remember anybody making such a hubbub over it. =The turmoil has quieted down a bit now. Алиса ушла в зоопарк попрощаться с Бронтей.=Alice has gone to the zoo to say good-bye to Bronty. А пока дома тихо,=And while the house is quiet, я решил надиктовать несколько историй из жизни Алисы и ее друзей.=I’ve decided to tape-record a number of stories about Alice and her friends. =I shall pass on the tapes to Alice’s teacher. Ей полезно будет знать,=It will be useful for her to know с каким несерьезным человеком ей придется иметь дело.=what a flighty creature she has to deal with. Может быть, эти записки помогут учительнице воспитать мою дочку.=Maybe the tapes will help the teacher educate my daughter. =At first Alice was just like any other child. =Until she was three. =The first story I’m going to tell will prove my contention. Но уже через год, когда она встретилась с Бронтей,=But a year later, when she met Bronty, в ее характере обнаружилось умение делать все не как положено, =the knack of doing everything she was not supposed to do suddenly appeared in her character: исчезать в самое неподходящее время=she got lost at a most inappropriate time и даже случайно делать открытия, которые оказались не по силам крупнейшим ученым современности.=and made chance discoveries beyond the powers of the most eminent scientists of our modern age. Алиса умеет извлекать выгоду из хорошего к себе отношения, =Alice has a positive talent for taking advantage of those she is on friendly terms with но тем не менее у нее масса верных друзей. =but, none the less, she has droves of real friends. =It makes it difficult, sometimes, for us — her parents. Ведь мы не можем все время сидеть дома; =You see, we cannot stay home all the time. я работаю в зоопарке,=I work at the zoo а наша мама строит дома,=and her mother builds houses, и притом часто на других планетах.=sometimes on other planets. Я хочу заранее предупредить учительницу Алисы=I want to warn Alice’s teacher beforehand — ей тоже будет, наверно, нелегко.=— it won’t be easy for her, either. Пускай же она внимательно выслушает совершенно правдивые истории,=To prove my point, I shall relate some perfectly true stories случившиеся с девочкой Алисой в разных местах Земли и космоса=about what happened to Alice in different places on Earth and in space, в течение последних трех лет.=over the last three years. Глава 1=Chapter 1 Я набираю номер =I VIDEOPHONE A NUMBER AT RANDOM Алиса не спит. =Alice is not asleep. =Ten o’clock, and she is not asleep. Я сказал:=So then I said: — Алиса, спи немедленно, а то…=” Alice , go to sleep at once, or else…” — Что «а то», папа?=“What’s ‘or else’, Daddy?” — А то я провидеофоню бабе-яге.=“Or else I’ll call Baba-Yaga[1] on the videophone.” — А кто такая баба-яга?=“And who’s Baba-Yaga?” =“Why, all children ought to know that! Баба-яга костяная нога — страшная, злая бабушка,=Baba-Yaga, pegleg hag-o, is a terribly wicked old woman которая кушает маленьких детей.=who eats up little children. Непослушных.=Disobedient ones.” — Почему?=“Why?” — Ну, потому что она злая и голодная.=“Well, because she’s wicked and hungry.” — А почему голодная?=“And why is she hungry?” — Потому что у нее в избушке нет продуктопровода.=“Because her hut is not equipped with a food supply pipe.” — А почему нет?=“Why not?” — Потому что избушка у нее старая-престарая и стоит далеко в лесу.=“Because her hut is an old rack-and-ruin, far away in the forest.” Алисе стало так интересно, что она даже села на кровати.=Alice became so interested, she even sat up in bed. — Она в заповеднике работает?=“Does she work in a forest reserve?” — Алиса, спать немедленно!=“ Alice , go to sleep at once.” =“But, Daddy, you promised to call Baba-Yaga. =“I’ll call her. Но ты об этом очень пожалеешь.=But you’ll be very sorry I did.” Я подошел к видеофону=I went to the videophone и наугад нажал несколько кнопок.=and pressed a few buttons at random. Я был уверен, что соединения не будет=I was sure no connection would be made, и бабы-яги «не окажется дома».=and Baba-Yaga would be ‘not at home’. =But I was mistaken. Экран видеофона просветлел,=The videophone screen lit up, загорелся ярче,=shone brightly, раздался щелчок =and a click sounded — кто-то нажал кнопку приема на другом конце линии, =— somebody had pushed the receiving button at the end of the line и еще не успело появиться на экране изображение,=and, before his image appeared on the screen, как сонный голос сказал:=a sleepy voice spoke: — Марсианское посольство слушает.=“This is the Martian Embassy.” — Ну как, папа, она придет?=“D’you suppose she’ll come, Daddy?” — крикнула из спальни Алиса.=cried Alice from the bedroom. — Она уже спит, — сердито сказал я.=“She’s already gone to sleep,” I snapped angrily- — Марсианское посольство слушает, — повторил голос.=“This is the Martian Embassy,” the voice repeated. =I turned back to the videophone. =A young Martian was looking at me. У него были зеленые глаза без ресниц.=He had green eyes with no eyelashes. — Простите, — сказал я,=“Excuse me,” I said. — я, очевидно, ошибся номером.=“Apparently, I pushed the wrong number.” =The Martian smiled. Он смотрел не на меня,=He was not looking at me, а на что-то за моей спиной.=but at something behind my back. Alice had got out of bed и стояла босиком на полу.=and stood behind me, bare-foot. — Добрый вечер, — сказала она марсианину.=“Good evening,” she said to the Martian. — Добрый вечер, девочка.=“Good evening, little girl.” — Это у вас живет баба-яга?=“Does Baba-Yaga live in your house?” Марсианин вопросительно посмотрел на меня.= The Martian looked at me questioningly/ — Понимаете, — сказал я, — Алиса не может заснуть, =“You see,” I said. ” Alice wouldn’t go to sleep, и я хотел провидеофонить бабе-яге,=and I wanted to videophone Baba-Yaga чтобы она ее наказала.=to punish her. Но вот ошибся номером.=But I got the wrong number.” Марсианин снова улыбнулся.=The Martian smiled again. =“Good night, Alice ,” he said. — Надо спать, а то папа позовет бабу-ягу.=“You’d better go to sleep, or else your Dad will call Baba-Yaga.” Марсианин попрощался со мной и отключился.=The Martian said good-bye and switched off. Now will you go to sleep?” — спросил я.=I asked. — Ты слышала, что сказал тебе дядя с Марса?=“You heard what the man from Mars told you?” And will you take me to Mars?” — Если будешь хорошо себя вести,=“If you behave yourself, летом туда полетим.=we’ll fly there next summer.” В конце концов Алиса уснула,=Finally Alice fell asleep, и я снова сел за работу.=and I sat down again to work. =I worked till one in the morning. =And at one o’clock, the videophone suddenly gave a muffled whirr. =I pushed the button. На меня глядел марсианин из посольства.=It was the Martian from the embassy. — Извините, пожалуйста, что я побеспокоил вас так поздно, — сказал он, =“I beg your pardon for disturbing you so late,” he said. — но ваш видеофон не отключен,=“But your videophone wasn’t turned off, и я решил, что вы еще не спите.=and I decided you weren’t asleep yet.” — Пожалуйста.=“That’s quite all right.” — Вы не могли бы помочь нам?=“Would you mind helping us out?” — сказал марсианин.=said the Martian. =“The whole embassy cannot sleep. Мы перерыли все энциклопедии,= We’ve gone through all the encyclopaedias, изучили видеофонную книгу,=searched the videophone directory, но не можем найти, кто такая баба-яга=but we can’t find out who Baba-Yaga is и где она живет…=or where she lives…” =A brontosaurus egg was brought to us at the Moscow zoo. =The egg was found by Chilean tourists in a landslide on the shores of the Enisei river. Яйцо было почти круглое=It was almost round in shape и замечательно сохранилось в вечной мерзлоте.=and wonderfully preserved in the permafrost. =they discovered the egg was absolutely fresh. И поэтому решено было поместить его в зоопарковский инкубатор.=And so they decided to put it in the zoo’s incubator. Конечно, мало кто верил в успех, =Naturally, there were not many who believed it would hatch successfully, но уже через неделю рентгеновские снимки показали, что зародыш бронтозавра развивается. =but after a week’s time X-ray plates showed that the brontosaurus embryo was developing. Как только об этом было объявлено по интервидению,=As soon as the news went out over intervision, в Москву начали слетаться со всех сторон ученые и корреспонденты.=scientists and reporters began flying in to Moscow from all directions. =We had to engage all the rooms in the eighty-storey Venus hotel on Gorky Street . =And even then, there was not enough room for everybody. Восемь турецких палеонтологов спали у меня в столовой, =Eight Turkish palaeontologists slept in my dining-room, я поместился в кухне с журналистом из Эквадора, =I moved into the kitchen with a journalist from Ecuador, а две корреспондентки журнала «Женщины Антарктиды» устроились в спальне Алисы.=while two women reporters from the magazine Women of the Antarctic were settled in Alice’s bedroom. Когда наша мама провидеофонила вечером из Нукуса,=When my wife videophoned that night from Nukus где она строит стадион,=where she was building a stadium, она решила, что не туда попала.=she thought she had the wrong number. =All the Earth teletransmission satellites beamed photographs of the egg. Яйцо сбоку, яйцо спереди; скелеты бронтозавра и яйцо…=Side view, front view, the brontosaurus skeleton, and the egg… =A congress of cosmophilologists arrived in full strength to visit the zoo. Но к тому времени мы уже прекратили доступ в инкубатор, =But by that time, we had already stopped all entry into the incubator room, и филологам пришлось смотреть на белых медведей и марсианских богомолов.=and they had to be satisfied with viewing the polar bears and the Martian praying mantis. =On the forty-sixth day of this lunatic way of life, the egg quivered. Мы с моим другом профессором Якатой сидели в этот момент у колпака,=At that moment my friend, Professor Yakata, and I were sitting beside the armoured glass shelter, под которым хранилось яйцо,=where we kept the egg, и пили чай.=drinking tea. =By then we had stopped believing that anything would hatch from the egg. Ведь мы больше его не просвечивали,=We didn’t X-ray it any more, d’you see, чтобы не повредить нашему «младенцу».=for fear of harming our “baby”. И мы не могли заниматься предсказаниями=And we could not make any predictions, — хотя бы потому, что никто до нас не пробовал выводить бронтозавров.=because nobody but ourselves had ever tried hatching out a brontosaurus. треснуло,=And so, the egg quivered, gave another crack and split и сквозь толстую кожистую скорлупу начала просовываться черная, похожая на змеиную, голова.=— through its thick, leathery shell, a black snake-like head began pushing its way out. =A whirring sound came from the automatic cinecameras. =I realized the red lamp over the incubator doors had flashed on. На территории зоопарка началось что-то весьма напоминающее панику.=Something very much like a panic broke out all through the grounds of the zoo. Через пять минут вокруг нас собрались все, кому положено было здесь находиться,=In five minutes, we were surrounded by everybody whose job it was to be here и многие из тех, кому находиться было совсем не обязательно, но очень хотелось. =and many who had no business to be but wanted to see. Сразу стало очень жарко.=And in such a crowd, it grew very hot. Наконец из яйца вылез маленький бронтозавренок.=Finally the little brontosaurus crawled out of the egg. — услышал я вдруг знакомый голос.=“What’s his name, Daddy?” I suddenly heard a familiar voice. =“ Alice !” I cried in surprise. — Ты как сюда попала?=“How did you get in here?” — Я с корреспондентами.=“I’m with the reporters.” — Но ведь детям сюда нельзя.=“But children aren’t allowed in here.” =“But I am! =I told everybody I was your daughter. И меня пустили.=And they let me in.” — Ты знаешь, что пользоваться знакомствами для личных целей нехорошо?=“You realize it’s not nice to use people you know for personal aims?” — Но ведь, папа, маленькому Бронте, может быть, скучно без детей, =“But Daddy, little Bronty might be bored without children. вот я и пришла.=That’s why I came.” =I threw up my hands in despair. =I didn’t have a minute to spare to take Alice out of the incubator. И не было вокруг никого,=And there was nobody around кто согласился бы это сделать за меня.=who would agree to do it for me. — Стой здесь и никуда не уходи,=“You stand right here, and don’t go away,” — сказал я ей,=I told her. а сам бросился к колпаку с новорожденным бронтозавром.=Then I ran to the glass shelter that held the new-born brontosaurus. =That whole evening Alice and I weren’t on speaking terms. =We had quarrelled. Я запретил ей появляться в инкубаторе, =I forbade her to go into the incubator, но она сказала, что не может меня послушаться,=but she said that she couldn’t obey me потому что ей жалко Бронтю.=because she was sorry for Bronty. =And the next day she stole into the incubator again. =She came with the astronauts from the spaceship Jupiter-8. Космонавты были героями, и никто не мог отказать им.=They were heroes, and nobody could refuse them anything. — Доброе утро, Бронтя,=“Good morning, Bronty,” — сказала она, подходя к колпаку.=she said, going over to the shelter. Бронтозавренок искоса посмотрел на нее.=The brontosaurus looked sidewise at her. — Чей это ребенок?=“Whose child is this?” =I almost wished the earth would swallow me up. Но Алиса за словом в карман не лезет.=But Alice was never at a loss for words. — спросила она.=“Don’t you like me?” she asked. =“What a question, on the contrary… =I simply thought you were lost, perhaps…” — Профессор совсем не умел разговаривать с маленькими девочками.=The professor had no gift at all in talking with little girls. =“All right,” said Alice . =“Bronty, I’ll come and see you tomorrow. Не скучай.=Don’t you feel lonely now.” =And Alice really did come the next day. =And kept coming almost every day. Все к ней привыкли=Everyone got used to her и пропускали без всяких разговоров.=and let her in without question. =I washed my hands of it. Все равно наш дом стоит рядом с зоопарком, =After all, our house stood next to the zoo, дорогу переходить нигде не надо, =there was no road to cross, да и попутчики ей всегда находились.=and besides she always found someone to bring her in. =The brontosaurus grew very fast. Через месяц он достиг двух с половиной метров длины, =In a month’s time he was over two and a half yards long, и его перевели в специально выстроенный павильон. =and we moved him into a pavilion specially built for him. Бронтозавр бродил по огороженному загону=The brontosaurus wandered along the railed-in enclosure и жевал молодые побеги бамбука и бананы.=and chewed young shoots of bamboo and bananas. Бамбук привозили грузовыми ракетами из Индии, =The bamboo was brought in by freight jet planes from India , а бананами нас снабжали фермеры из Малаховки.=and the bananas came from the “Irrigation-Field” state farm. =A warm salt-water pool shone in the centre of the enclosure. Такая нравилась бронтозавру.=Everything to please a brontosaurus. =But suddenly he lost his appetite. =For three days, the bamboo and bananas lay untouched. На четвертый день бронтозавр лег на дно бассейна=On the fourth day, the brontosaurus lay on the bottom of the pool, и положил на пластиковый борт маленькую черную голову. =his small black head resting on the plastic rim. =Everything indicated he intended to die. =We could not permit it. =You see, he was the only brontosaurus we had. =The best doctors in the world tried to help us, =but all in vain. =Alice did not know of the tragedy. =I had sent her to her grandmother’s in Vnukovo. Но на четвертый день=But on the fourth day, она включила телевизор как раз в тот момент,=she turned on the television at the very moment когда передавали сообщение об ухудшении здоровья бронтозавра.=they were giving the news about the failing health of the brontosaurus. Я уж не знаю, как она уговорила бабушку,=I still don’t know how she persuaded her grandmother, но в то же утро Алиса вбежала в павильон.=but that same morning Alice ran into the pavilion. =“Daddy!” she cried. — Как ты мог скрыть от меня?=“How could you keep it from me? Как ты мог?..=How could you?…” =“Later, Alice , later,” I answered. — У нас совещание.=“We are having a meeting.” =And so we were having a meeting. Оно не прекращалось последние три дня.=It had been going on for the last three days. =Alice said nothing, and went away. А еще через минуту я услышал,=But the next moment I heard как рядом кто-то ахнул.=somebody beside me gasp. Я обернулся и увидел,=I turned and saw что Алиса уже перебралась через барьер,=that Alice had already climbed over the guard-rail, соскользнула в загон =slipped into the enclosure и побежала к морде бронтозавра. =and started running toward the brontosaurus’s head. В руке у нее была белая булка.=She had a bun in her hand. — Ешь, Бронтя, — сказала она, =“Eat it, Bronty,” she said, — а то они тебя здесь голодом заморят. =“or else they’ll leave you here to die of hunger. Мне бы тоже на твоем месте надоели бананы.=In your place, I’d be fed up with bananas, too.” =And before I managed to reach the guardrail, something unbelievable happened. То, что прославило Алису=Something which made Alice famous, и сильно испортило репутацию нам, биологам.=but had an awful effect on our reputation, as biologists. Бронтозавр поднял голову,=The brontosaurus raised his head, посмотрел на Алису=looked at Alice , и осторожно взял булку у нее из рук.=and carefully took the bun from her hand. — Тише, папа,=“Quiet, Daddy.” — погрозила мне пальцем Алиса,=Alice threatened me with her finger, увидев, что я хочу перепрыгнуть через барьер. =on seeing that I wanted to leap over the railing. — Бронтя тебя боится.=“Bronty’s afraid of you.” — Он ей ничего не сделает, — сказал профессор Яката.=“He’s not going to harm her,” said Prof. Yakata. =I could see that for myself. Но что будет, если эту сцену увидит бабушка?=But what if her grandmother was watching the scene? =Afterwards, scientists argued over it for a long time. =They are still arguing to this day. Одни говорят, что Бронтя нуждался в перемене пищи,=Some say that Bronty needed a change of food, а другие — что он больше, чем нам, доверял Алисе. =others that he trusted Alice more than he did us. Но так или иначе кризис миновал.=But, one way or another, the crisis was over. =Now Bronty has become completely tame. Хотя в нем около тридцати метров длины,=Though he is about thirty yards long, для него нет большего удовольствия, чем покатать на себе Алису.=nothing gives him greater delight than to let Alice ride on his back. Один из моих ассистентов сделал специальную стремянку, =One of my assistants made a special step ladder и, когда Алиса приходит в павильон,=and, when Alice enters the pavilion, Бронтя протягивает в угол свою длиннющую шею,=Bronty reaches his long neck into the corner берет треугольными зубами стоящую там стремянку =and picks up the step ladder standing there with his triangular teeth, и ловко подставляет ее к своему черному блестящему боку.=setting it deftly against his shining black side. Потом он катает Алису по павильону=Then he gives Alice a ride round the pavilion или плавает с ней в бассейне.=or swims in the pool with her on his back. Глава 3=Chapter 3 Тутексы =TUTEKSI Как я обещал Алисе, я взял ее с собой на Марс,=As I’d promised Alice , I took her to Mars with me когда полетел туда на конференцию.=when I flew there to attend a conference. =We landed safe and sound. Правда, я не очень хорошо переношу невесомость=True, I don’t tolerate weightlessness too well, и поэтому предпочитал не вставать с кресла,=so I kept my seat during the trip, но моя дочка все время порхала по кораблю, =but my daughter flitted about the spaceship all the time. и однажды мне пришлось снимать ее с потолка рубки управления, =Once we had to pull her off the ceiling in the control deck потому что она хотела нажать на красную кнопку,=because she wanted to push the red button, а именно: на кнопку экстренного торможения.=namely, the button for emergency braking. Но пилоты на нее не очень рассердились.=But the pilots weren’t very angry with her. На Марсе мы осмотрели город, =On Mars, we went sightseeing in town, съездили с туристами в пустыню =travelled with tourists into the desert и побывали в Больших пещерах. =and visited the Great Caves. Но после этого мне некогда было заниматься с Алисой, =But after that I had no time for Alice и я отдал ее на неделю в интернат.=and installed her in a boarding-school for a week. На Марсе работает много наших специалистов, =Many of our specialists work on Mars, и марсиане помогли нам построить громадный купол детского городка. =and the Martians helped us build a huge cupola over a miniature Kinder-town. =There are real earth trees growing there — it is a fine place. =Sometimes the children go on excursions. Тогда они надевают маленькие скафандры=Then they wear small space-suits и выходят вереницей на улицу.=and come out into the big city streets walking in double rows. Татьяна Петровна — так зовут воспитательницу=The school-mistress, Tatyana Petrovna was her name, — сказала, что я могу не беспокоиться.=said I wasn’t to worry. =Alice told me the same, too. И мы попрощались с ней на неделю.=And we parted for a week. =The third day, Alice disappeared. =It was a perfectly extraordinary occurrence. Начать с того,=To begin with, что за всю историю интерната никто из него не пропадал=in all the history of the boarding-school, not one inmate had ever disappeared, и даже не терялся больше чем на десять минут. =or even been lost, for more than ten minutes. =On Mars, it is simply impossible to get lost in town. =And all the more so for an Earth-child, dressed in a space-suit. =The very first Martian who met the child would bring him or her back. =And the robots? =And the Security Service? Нет, потеряться на Марсе невозможно.=Why, it’s impossible to get lost on Mars. =But Alice got lost. Ее не было уже около двух часов,=She hadn’t been seen for about two hours, когда меня вызвали с конференции=when they called me away from the conference и на марсианском вездеходе-прыгуне привезли в интернат.=and took me to the boarding-school on a Martian Cross-Country Hopper. Вид у меня был, наверно, растерянный, =I probably looked rather upset, потому что, когда я появился под куполом,=because when I appeared under the cupola, все собравшиеся там сочувственно замолчали.=everybody gathered there fell silent in sympathy. =And who wasn’t there, though! Все преподаватели и роботы интерната, =All the teachers and workers at the boarding-school, десять марсиан в скафандрах=ten Martians in space-suits (им приходится надевать скафандры, когда они входят под купол, в земной воздух),=(they had to wear them under the cupola because of the heavier Earth air pressure), звездолетчики, начальник спасателей Назарян, археологи…=interstellar pilots, Chief Nazaryan of the Life-Saving Service, archaeologists… Оказывается, телестанция города уже час как через каждые три минуты передавала сообщение о том,=Apparently, for over an hour the city television centre had been broadcasting the news, every three minutes, что пропала девочка с Земли. =that a little girl from Earth had disappeared. =All videophones on Mars gave out alarm signals. В марсианских школах были прекращены занятия,=Lessons were stopped in Martian schools и школьники, разделившись на группы, прочесывали город и окрестности.=while the pupils, in groups, combed all the city and its environs. =only when her group had returned from a walk. =Two hours had passed since then. Кислорода же в ее скафандре — на три часа.=And the air in her space-suit tank was sufficient to last only three hours. =if they had looked for her in all secluded nooks in the school or near it. Может быть, она нашла марсианского богомола=Perhaps she had found a Martian praying mantis, и наблюдает за ним…=and was absorbed in watching it… Мне ответили, что подвалов в городе нет, =I was told there were no cellars in town, а все укромные места обследованы школьниками и студентами марсианского университета, =and all secluded spots had been searched by the pupils and by the Martian university students которые эти места знают назубок.=who knew such places like the palms of their hands. =I was angry at Alice . =Why, of course, any second she would come round the corner wearing the most innocent expression in the world. =And, really, her behaviour had caused more trouble in the city than a sand storm. Все марсиане=All the Martians и все земляне, живущие в городе,=and all the Earthmen living in town оторваны от своих дел, =had had to drop all their affairs, поднята на ноги вся спасательная служба. =all the life-saving personnel had been called in to help. =At the same time I was beginning to be seriously alarmed. Это ее приключение могло плохо кончиться.=This adventure of hers might end badly. Все время поступали сообщения от поисковых партий: =News from the search parties kept pouring in: «Школьники второй марсианской прогимназии осмотрели стадион.=“Pupils of the Second Martian Grammar School inspected the stadium. Алисы нет»,=No Alice “, «Фабрика марсианских сладостей сообщает,=“The Martian Sweets Factory reports что ребенка на ее территории не обнаружено…»=that no child has been found on its territory…” «Может быть, она в самом деле умудрилась выбраться в пустыню?=“Maybe she has actually managed to get into the desert?” =I thought. =“She would be found by now if she were in the city. =But the desert… Марсианские пустыни еще толком не изучены, =The Martian deserts have not yet been fully explored, и там можно потеряться так, что тебя и через десять лет не найдут. =and you could get lost there and not be found for ten years or more. Но ведь ближайшие районы пустыни уже обследованы на прыгунах-вездеходах…»=But the nearest desert vicinities have already been searched on cross-country hoppers…” — Нашли!=“They’ve found her!” — вдруг закричал марсианин в синем хитоне,=suddenly cried a Martian in a blue tunic, глядя в карманный телевизор.=as he stared into a pocket television set. Где?=“Where? How? Where?” — заволновались собравшиеся под куполом.=came excited cries from everybody under the domed cupola in Kinder-town. В двухстах километрах отсюда.=“In the desert, one hundred and fifty miles away.” — В двухстах?!=“One hundred and fifty!” «Конечно, — подумал я, — они не знают Алису. =“Of course,” I thought to myself. “They don’t know my Alice . От нее этого можно было ждать».=Just what one might expect of her.” — Девочка себя хорошо чувствует и скоро будет здесь.=“The girl’s feeling fine, and will soon he here.” — А как же она туда забралась?=“But how did she get out there?” — На почтовой ракете.=“On a post jet plane.” =“But of course,” said Tatyana Petrovna, beginning to cry. Она переживала больше всех.=She had suffered more than any of us. Все бросились ее утешать.=Everybody hurried to comfort her. — Мы же проходили мимо почтамта,=“We were walking past the post-office, и там загружались автоматические почтовые ракеты. =and they were loading the robot post-jets. =But I didn’t pay any attention, Ведь их видишь по сто раз на дню!=because you see them a hundred times a day.” А через десять минут,=And ten minutes later, когда марсианский летчик ввел Алису,=when the Martian pilot brought Alice in, все стало ясно.=everything was cleared up. — Я туда залезла, чтобы взять письмо, — сказала Алиса.=“I crawled in to get a letter,” said Alice . — Какое письмо?=“What letter?” =“But Daddy, you said Mum would write us a letter. Вот я и заглянула в ракету, чтобы взять письмо.=So I looked in the jet to see if I could find it.” =“But of course. Дверца была открыта, и там лежало много писем.=The doors were open, and many letters were there.” — А потом?=“And then?” =“I no sooner crawled in, when the doors closed and the jet took off. =I started looking for the button, to stop it. =There were many buttons. Когда я нажала последнюю,=When I pushed the last one, ракета пошла вниз, и потом дверь открылась.=the jet landed and the door opened. Я вышла, а вокруг песок,=I went out and all around there was only sand, и тети Тани нет, и ребят нет.=and no Tatyana Petrovna, and no children.” — Она нажала кнопку срочной посадки!=“She pushed the button for an emergency landing!” — с восхищением в голосе сказал марсианин в синем хитоне.=said the Martian in the blue tunic, all admiration. — Я немного поплакала, а потом решила идти домой.=“I cried a bit, and then decided to come home.” — А как ты догадалась, куда идти?=“And how did you guess which way to go?” =“I climbed up a small hill to take a look from there. =And there was a door in the hill. =I could see nothing from the hilltop. Тогда я вошла в комнатку и села там.=So then I went into the room and sat down.” =“What door?” wondered the Martian. — В том районе только пустыня.=“There’s only desert in that area.” =“No, there was a door and a room. =And in the room there was a big stone. =Like an Egyptian pyramid. =Only a small one. Помнишь, папа, ты читал мне книжку про египетскую пирамиду?=Remember, Daddy, you read me a book about an Egyptian pyramid?” Неожиданное заявление Алисы привело в сильное волнение марсиан=Alice’s unexpected explanation greatly excited the Martian и Назаряна, начальника спасателей.=and Chief Nazaryan of the Life-Saving Service. =“The Tuteksi!” they cried. =“Where was the girl found? Координаты!=Give us the position!” И половину присутствующих как языком слизнуло.=And half those present disappeared like smoke. А Татьяна Петровна,=Then Tatyana Petrovna, которая взялась сама накормить Алису,=who had personally brought Alice something to eat, рассказала мне,=told me что много тысяч лет назад на Марсе=that thousands of years ago on Mars существовала таинственная цивилизация тутексов.=there had once lived a mysterious civilization called the Tuteksi. =Only small stone pyramids remained as relics. До сих пор=Up to now, ни марсиане, ни археологи с Земли=neither the Martians nor Earth archaeologists не смогли найти ни одного строения тутексов=had been able to find a single building of the Tuteksi — только пирамидки, разбросанные по пустыне и занесенные песком. =— there were only small pyramids scattered through the desert and covered with sand. И вот Алиса случайно наткнулась на строение тутексов.=And now Alice had actually stumbled on a Tuteksi building. =“There, you see. Again you’re in luck,” I said. =“But all the same, I’m taking you home at once. Без скафандра.=You can get lost there all you want. Without a space-suit.” — Мне тоже больше нравится теряться дома, — сказала Алиса…=“I also prefer getting lost at home,” said Alice. Two months later I read an article in the Russian journal Round the World. под названием «Вот какими были тутексы».=It was called “What the Tuteksi Were Like”, В ней рассказывалось, что в марсианской пустыне удалось наконец обнаружить ценнейшие памятники тутекской культуры. =and stated that a valuable monument of the Tuteksi culture had at last been found in the Martian desert. =Now scientists were engaged in deciphering the writings on the pyramid. Но самое интересное — на пирамидке обнаружено изображение тутекса,=But the most interesting of all was the discovery of a drawing of a Tuteks, великолепное по сохранности.=in a wonderful state of preservation. И тут же была фотография пирамидки с портретом тутекса.=And there was a photograph of the pyramid with the portrait of a Tuteks. =Somehow, this portrait seemed familiar, И страшное подозрение охватило меня.=and a strange foreboding came over me. — Алиса, — очень строго сказал я, =“Alice,” I said in my severest voice. — признайся честно, =“Tell me the truth, now. ты ничего не рисовала на пирамидке,=Did you draw anything on the pyramid когда потерялась в пустыне?=when you were lost in the desert?” Перед тем как ответить, Алиса подошла ко мне=Before answering, Alice came up и внимательно посмотрела на картинку в журнале.=and looked attentively at the picture in the journal. =“That’s right, it’s a drawing of you. Только я не рисовала,=Only I didn’t draw it, а нацарапала камешком. =I scratched it with a stone. Мне там так скучно было…=I was so awfully bored…” Глава 4=Chapter 4 Застенчивый Шуша =THE SHY LITTLE SHUSHA У Алисы много знакомых зверей: =Alice has many animal friends. два котенка;=Two kittens; марсианский богомол, который живет у нее под кроватью=a Martian praying mantis which lives under her bed и по ночам подражает балалайке;=and imitates a balalaika at night; ежик, который жил у нас недолго,=a hedgehog, who lived with us briefly а потом ушел обратно в лес;=and then went back to the woods; бронтозавр Бронтя=the brontosaurus Bronty — к нему Алиса ходит в гости в зоопарк;=— Alice visits him in the zoo и, наконец, соседская собака Рекс,=— and lastly our neighbours’ dog, Rex, по-моему, карликовая такса не очень чистых кровей.=a toy dachshund, but to my mind, of dubious breed. Еще одним зверем Алиса обзавелась,=Alice acquired one more animal когда вернулась первая экспедиция с Сириуса.=when the first expedition to Sirius returned. Алиса познакомилась с Полосковым на первомайской демонстрации.=She met Poroshkov at the First of May demonstration. Я не знаю, как она это устроила:=How she arranged it, I don’t know у Алисы широкие связи. =— Alice has wide connections. Так или иначе,=One way or another, она оказалась среди ребят,=she mingled with the children которые принесли космонавтам цветы.=who presented flowers to the astronauts. Представьте мое удивление, когда я вижу по телевизору =Imagine my surprise when I saw Alice on television! — бежит Алиса по летному полю=She was running across the square с букетом голубых роз больше ее самой=carrying a bouquet of blue roses bigger than herself, и вручает его самому Полоскову.=and she gave it to Poroshkov. Полосков взял ее на руки, =Poroshkov took her up in his arms. они вместе смотрели парад=They watched the parade together, и вместе ушли.=and left together. Алиса вернулась домой только вечером=Alice returned home only toward evening, с большой красной сумкой в руках.=carrying a large red case. — Ты где была?=“Where have you been?” — Больше всего я была в детском саду, — ответила она.=“Most of the time, at kindergarten,” she answered me. — А меньше всего где ты была?=“And the rest of the time?” — Нас еще возили на космодром.=“We also went to the Red Square.” — И потом?=“And after that?” Алиса поняла, что я смотрел телевизор, и сказала:=Alice realized I had seen her on television. — Еще меня попросили поздравить космонавтов.=“Besides, I was asked to welcome the astronauts.” — Кто же это тебя попросил?=“Who asked you to do that?” — Один человек, ты его не знаешь.=“A friend of mine — you don’t know him.” — Алиса, тебе не приходилось сталкиваться с термином «телесные наказания»?=“Alice, have you ever come across the term ‘corporal punishment’?” =“Oh, I know: that’s when you get a spanking. Но, я думаю, только в сказках.=But I thought it only belonged in fairy tales.” =“I’m afraid we’ll have to make the fairy tale a fact. Почему ты всегда лезешь куда не следует?=Why do you always worm yourself into places you shouldn’t?” Алиса хотела было на меня обидеться, =Alice was on the point of showing her resentment, но вдруг красная сумка у нее в руке зашевелилась.=but suddenly the red case in her arms began jiggling. — Это еще что такое?=“What have you got there?” — Это подарок от Полоскова.=“It’s a present from Poroshkov.” =“You asked him for a present. Этого еще не хватало!=That’s going too far!” =“I didn’t ask for anything. =It’s a shusha. =Poroshkov brought them from Sirius. Маленький шуша, шушонок, можно сказать.=A little shusha, a baby shusha, you might say.” И Алиса осторожно достала из сумки маленького шестилапого зверька,=And Alice carefully pulled out of the red case a six-legged creature похожего на кенгуренка.=resembling a kangaroo. =The baby shusha had the large bulging eyes of a dragon-fly. Он быстро вращал ими,=It rolled its eyes quickly, крепко вцепившись верхней парой лап в Алисин костюм.=clinging tightly to Alice’s dress with its forepaws. =“See? He loves me already,” said Alice. — Я ему сделаю постель.=“I’ll make him a bed.” =I knew the story of the shushas. Все знали историю с шушами,=Everybody did, а мы, биологи, в особенности.=especially we biologists. У меня в зоопарке было уже пять шуш,=I have five of them now in the zoo, и со дня на день мы ожидали прибавления семейства.=and from day to day we expect additions to the family. =Poroshkov and Bauer had found the shushas on one of the planets in the system of Sirius. Эти милые, безобидные зверушки,=These gentle, inoffensive creatures которые ни на шаг не отставали от космонавтов,=who stuck close to the astronauts оказались млекопитающими,=were mammals хотя по повадкам больше всего напоминали наших пингвинов. =but, above all, they reminded you of penguins by their habits. То же спокойное любопытство=The same patient curiosity, и вечные попытки залезть в самые неподходящие места.=the same everlasting attempts to crawl into the most inappropriate places. Зеленому даже пришлось как-то спасать шушонка,=Once Bauer had to rescue a baby shusha который собирался потонуть в большой банке сгущенного молока.=who was about to drown himself in a huge tin of condensed milk. Экспедиция привезла целый фильм о шушах,=The expedition brought back a whole film on the shushas; который прошел с большим успехом во всех кинотеатрах и видеорамах.=it was a big hit at all the cinemas and on TV. =Unfortunately, the expedition had no time for a proper study of these animals. Известно, что шуши приходили в лагерь экспедиции с утра,=They only knew that the shushas came into camp in the mornings, а с наступлением темноты куда-то исчезали,=and disappeared at nightfall, скрывались в скалах.=hiding somewhere in the cliffs. Так или иначе,=One way or another, когда экспедиция уже возвращалась обратно,=when the expedition was already on the way back, в одном из отсеков Полосков обнаружил трех шуш,=Poroshkov found three shushas in one of the ship’s compartments. которые, наверно, заблудились в корабле.=They had probably got lost in the spaceship. Правда, Полосков подумал сначала,=True, Poroshkov thought at first что шуш протащил на корабль контрабандой кто-нибудь из участников экспедиции,=that the shushas had been smuggled on board by one of the crew, но возмущение его товарищей было таким искренним,=but the latter’s indignation was so sincere что Полоскову пришлось отказаться от своих подозрений.=he had to abandon his suspicions. =The appearance of the shushas gave rise to a mass of additional problems. =First, they might prove to be the source of unknown infections. =Second, they might die during the trip, from the change of conditions. =And lastly, nobody knew what they ate… И так далее.=And so on… =But all misgivings proved false. Шуши отлично перенесли дезинфекцию, =The shushas held out perfectly during the disinfection period, послушно питались бульоном и консервированными фруктами. =obediently fed on bouillon and tinned fruits. Из-за этого они нажили себе кровного врага в лице Зеленого,=Over the last, they made a deadly enemy of Bauer который любил компот,=who was extremely fond of fruit preserves, а последние месяцы экспедиции ему пришлось отказаться от компота=for the crew had to get along without any during the last months of the trip — его съели «зайцы».=so the stowaways could be fed. =One fine day during the long journey, a shusha gave birth to six little ones. =So when the ship landed on Earth, it was overladen with shushas and their babies. Они оказались понятливыми зверушками =The animals were quick to learn, и никаких неприятностей и неудобств никому, кроме Зеленого, не причиняли.=and caused nobody any unpleasantness or discomfort — except Bauer, of course. =I remember the historic moment when the expedition landed. Открылся люк и вместо космонавтов=The hatchway opened and instead of the spacemen под прицелом кино- и телевизионных камер=under the eyes of the cinema and TV cameras в его отверстии показался удивительный шестилапый зверь.=out came these amazing, six-legged creatures За ним еще несколько таких же, только поменьше.=followed by their little ones. =A sigh of wonder ran through the Earth. =But at that moment a smiling Poroshkov followed the shushas down the ship’s ramp, Он нес на руках шушонка,=carrying in his arms a baby shusha перемазанного сгущенным молоком…=all splotched with condensed milk. Часть зверьков попала в зоопарк,=Some of the animals arrived in our zoo, некоторые остались у полюбивших их космонавтов.=others remained pets of the astronauts. =Poroshkov’s baby shusha finally ended up with Alice. Бог уж ее знает, чем она очаровала сурового космонавта Полоскова.=God knows how she charmed it away from such a stern chap as Poroshkov. Шуша жил в большой корзине рядом с Алисиной кроватью, =The shusha lived in a large basket beside Alice’s bed, мяса не употреблял, =did not eat meat, ночью спал, =slept soundly at night, дружил с котятами, =made friends with the kittens, боялся богомола =was afraid of the praying mantis, и тихо мурлыкал,=and softly purred когда Алиса гладила его=when Alice stroked him или рассказывала о своих удачах и бедах.=or told him all her ups and downs. Шуша быстро рос =Shusha — so we named him — grew quickly и через два месяца стал ростом с Алису. =and in two months was as tall as Alice. Они ходили гулять в садик напротив, =They would go walking in the park opposite our house, и Алиса никогда не надевала на него ошейник.=and Alice never used a collar or leash with the animal. — Или попадет под машину?=“What if he frightens somebody?” I asked. =“Oh, he wouldn’t. =And besides, his feelings would be hurt if I put a collar on him. Он ведь такой чуткий.=You see, he’s so sensitive.” =Once Alice could not sleep. Она капризничала и требовала, чтобы я читал ей про доктора Айболита.=She was capricious and insisted I read her the story of Dr. Doolittle.” =“I’ve no time, child,” I told her. =“I’ve some rush work to do. Кстати, тебе пора читать книжки самой.=By the way, it’s time you read books yourself.” — Но это же не книжка, а микрофильм,=“But it’s not a book — it’s a microfilm, и там буквы маленькие.=and the letters are tiny.” =“Well, there’s a sound attachment. Не хочешь читать — включи звук.=If you don’t want to read it, switch on the sound.” — Мне холодно вставать.=“I don’t want to get out of bed to switch it on. I’m cold.” =“Then you’ll have to wait. Я допишу и включу.=I’ll finish what I’m writing and come and turn it on.” — Не хочешь — Шушу попрошу.=“You don’t want to. I’ll ask Shusha.” — Ну попроси, — улыбнулся я.=“Then ask him,” and I smiled to myself. И через минуту вдруг услышал из соседней комнаты нежный микрофильмированный голос:=A minute later I suddenly heard the gentle microfilm voice in the next room: «…И еще была у Айболита собака Авва».=“…And Dr. Doolittle also had a dog called Avva.” Значит, Алиса все-таки встала и дотянулась до выключателя.=That meant Alice had got up to switch it on. =“Get right back into bed,” I called out. — Простудишься.=“You’ll catch cold.” — А я в постели.=“But I am in bed.” =“You shouldn’t tell lies. Кто же тогда включил микрофильм?=Who turned the microfilm on, then?” =I certainly did not want my daughter to grow up a liar. Я отложил работу, пошел к ней и решил серьезно поговорить.=I put my work aside, and went to her room for a serious talk. =The screen hung on the wall. Шуша орудовал у микропроектора, =Shusha was running the micro-projector, а на экране несчастные звери толпились у дверей доброго доктора Айболита.=and on the screen some unfortunate animals were crowding round the door of the good Dr. Doolittle. — искренне удивился я.=“How did you manage to train him?” I asked, sincerely surprised. =“I didn’t have to train him. Он сам все умеет.=He can do everything himself, without that.” Шуша смущенно перебирал передними лапами перед грудью.=Shusha shyly moved his front paws up and down over his chest. Наступило неловкое молчание.=There was an awkward silence. — сказал наконец я.=“But just the same…” I finally got out. =“Excuse me,” broke in a shrill, wheezy voice. =It was Shusha. =“But I really did learn to do it myself. Это ведь не трудно.=After all, it’s not difficult.” — сказал я.=“Would you mind telling me how…” I began. =“It’s not difficult,” repeated Shusha. — Вы сами позавчера показывали Алисе сказку про короля богомолов.=“The day before yesterday you showed Alice a fairy tale about the King of the Praying Mantises.” =“No, that’s not what I meant. Как вы научились говорить?=How did you learn to talk?” — Мы с ним занимались, — сказала Алиса.=“We practised together,” said Alice. =“I simply can’t take it in. Десятки биологов работают с шушами, =Dozens of biologists are working with the shushas, и ни разу ни один шуша не сказал ни слова.=but not one of them has said a single word.” =“And our Shusha can even read. Умеешь?=Can’t you?” — Немного.=“A bit.” — Он мне столько интересного рассказывает…=“He tells me such interesting things…” — Мы с вашей дочкой большие друзья.=“Your daughter and I are great friends.” — Так почему же вы столько времени молчали?=“But why have you kept silent so long?” — Он стеснялся, — ответила за Шушу Алиса.=“He’s shy,” Alice answered for the shusha. Шуша потупил глаза.=Shusha lowered his eyes. =In summer, we live at Vnukovo. Это очень удобно, =It’s very convenient, потому что туда ходит монорельс =because the monorail goes there, и от него до дачи пять минут ходу. =arid from the stop to the cottage it’s only a five-minute walk. В лесу, по другую сторону дороги, растут подберезовики и подосиновики, =In the woods across the road, many brown and orange-cap mushrooms grow но их меньше, чем грибников.=— but not enough to go round for all who go gathering mushrooms. Я приезжал на дачу прямо из зоопарка =I always went to the cottage straight from the zoo и вместо отдыха попадал в кипение тамошней жизни. =but, instead of finding relaxation, was caught up in the whirlpool of resort life. Центром ее был соседский мальчик Коля,=The vortex of it all was our neighbour’s boy, Kolya, который славился на все Внуково тем, что отнимал у детей игрушки.=famous through all Vnukovo for taking toys away from children. К нему даже приезжал психолог из Владивостока =A psychologist had even come from Leningrad to see him, и написал потом диссертацию о мальчике Коле. =and afterwards wrote his thesis on the boy. Психолог изучал Колю, =The psychologist made a study of Kolya, а Коля ел варенье и ныл круглые сутки. =but the latter kept eating jam and whining day and night. Я привез ему из города трехколесную фотонную ракету,=I brought him a three-wheeled photon-rocket from town, чтобы он поменьше хныкал.=hoping he wouldn’t whimper so much. Кроме того, там жила Колина бабушка,=Living there besides Kolya were his old grandmother которая любила поговорить о генетике=— who loved to talk on genetics и писала роман о Менделе,=and was writing a novel about Mendel бабушка Алисы, мальчик Юра и его мама Карма, =— Alice’s grandmother, a boy called Yuri and his mother Karma; трое близнецов с соседней улицы,=then there were the three triplets on the next street которые пели хором под моим окном,=who sang in a chorus under my window, и, наконец, привидение.=and last of all — the Spectre. Привидение жило где-то под яблоней=The Spectre lived somewhere under an apple-tree in the garden, и появилось сравнительно недавно.=and had turned up comparatively recently. =Only Alice and Kolya’s grandmother believed in it, Больше никто в него не верил.=but nobody else. Мы сидели с Алисой на террасе=Alice and I were sitting on the verandah и ждали, пока новый робот=waiting for our new robot Щелковской фабрики=— put out by the Shchelkovo factory приготовит манную кашу.=— to make farina for supper. Робот уже два раза перегорал, =The robot had already short-circuited twice, и мы вместе с Алисой ругали фабрику, =and both Alice and I had cursed the factory, но самим приниматься за хозяйство не хотелось, =but neither of us wanted to do the cooking ourselves а бабушка наша уехала в театр.=and Granny had gone to the theatre. Алиса сказала:=Then Alice said: — Сегодня он придет.=“He’ll come today.” — Кто — он?=“Who will?” — Мой привидений.=“My specater.” — Привидение — оно, — автоматически поправил я, не сводя глаз с робота.=“Spectre,” I corrected her, automatically, not taking my eyes off the robot. =“All right,” said Alice, not bothering to argue. =“So it’s my ‘spectre’ then. =And Kolya stole nuts from the triplets. =“Quite amazing. Так что ты говорила о привидении?=What were you saying about the spectre?” — Он хороший.=“He’s very nice.” — У тебя все хорошие.=“You think everybody’s nice.” =“Well, except Kolya. Я думаю, если бы я привез огнедышащую гадюку,=Honestly, if I brought home our new, fire-spitting serpent, ты бы с ней тоже подружилась.=I’m sure you’d make friends with it.” А она добрая?=“Probably. Is it kind?” =“Nobody’s been able to talk with it on that subject yet. Она живет на Марсе и брызгается кипящим ядом.=Its home is on Mars, and it spits boiling hot poison.” =“Probably its feelings are hurt. Зачем вы увезли ее с Марса?=Why did you bring it away from Mars?” =I could find nothing to answer. =It was the utter truth. =We hadn’t asked the snake’s permission before shipping it on the Kaluga from Mars. А она по пути сожрала любимую собаку корабля «Калуга», =And on the way, it had swallowed the spaceship crew’s favourite dog. за что ее возненавидели все космонавты.=After that, all the astronauts hated it. =“So what’s all this about a spectre? — переменил я тему.=What does it look like?” I changed the subject. — Оно ходит, только когда темно.=“It walks only when it gets dark.” =“Well, naturally. =Spectres have done that since the beginning of time. Наслушалась ты сказок Колиной бабушки…=Have you been listening to the tales of Kolya’s grandma?” =“His grandma only tells me about the history of genetics. Какие были на Менделя гонения.=About the persecution of Mendel.” — Да, кстати, а как реагирует твое привидение на крик петуха?=“Ye-s, and incidentally how does your spectre react to the crow of a cock?” Why should he?” — Понимаешь, порядочному привидению положено исчезать со страшными проклятьями, когда на рассвете прокричит петух.=“Well, you see, respectable spectres are supposed to vanish, uttering terrible curses, when the cock crows.” — Я спрошу его сегодня про петуха.=“I’ll ask him about it this evening.” — Ну хорошо.=“Very well.” =“And to-night I’ll go to bed a bit later. Мне нужно поговорить с привидением.=I have to talk with the spectre.” =“Please do. =All right, we’ve had our little joke, and that’s enough. Робот уже кашу переварил.=The robot’s overcooked the cereal again.” =Alice concentrated on her cereal, and I on some scientific reports from the Guiana zoo. =There was an interesting article on Stingites. =A revolution in zoology. =They had managed to breed them in captivity. Дети рождались темно-зелеными,=At birth, the offspring were dark-green, несмотря на то, что у обоих родителей панцирь был голубым.=despite the fact that the shells of both parents were blue. =It was growing dark. Алиса сказала: — Ну, я пошла.=“Well, I’m off,” said Alice. — Ты куда?=“Where are you going?” =“To the spectre. Ты же обещал.=You already promised I could.” =“But I thought you were joking. Ну, если тебе так нужно в сад, то выйди, только надень кофточку, =Well, if you must go into the garden, go inside and put on a sweater. =It’s turning cold. И чтоб не дальше яблони.=And don’t go farther than the apple-tree.” =“Why should I? Он меня там ждет.=That’s where he’s waiting for me.” =Alice ran into the garden. =I followed her with half an eye. =I did not want to invade her world of fantasy. Пускай ее окружают и привидения,=Let her surround herself with spectres и волшебницы, и отважные рыцари,=and wizards, with brave knights, и добрые великаны со сказочной голубой планеты…=and good giants from fairy-like blue planets… Конечно, если она будет ложиться спать вовремя и нормально есть.=Of course, just so long as she went to bed on time and ate her meals regularly. Я потушил свет на веранде,=I turned out the verandah light, чтобы он не мешал мне присматривать за Алисой.=so it would not interfere with my watching Alice. Вот она подошла к яблоне, старой и ветвистой, =There she was, nearing the old apple-tree with its thick, spreading branches. и встала под ней.=Now she was standing under it. И тут…=And then… От ствола яблони отделилась голубая тень=A blue shadow moved away from the trunk of the tree, и двинулась ей навстречу.=and came to meet Alice. Тень будто плыла по воздуху, не касаясь травы.=The shadow seemed to float through the air not touching the grass. В следующий момент,=The next moment, схватив что-то тяжелое,=grabbing whatever heavy object I could find, я уже бежал вниз по лестнице,=I was running down the steps, перепрыгивая через три ступеньки. =taking them three at a time. =There was something about this I didn’t like. =It was either some kind of stupid joke, or… Что «либо», я не придумал.=I didn’t think beyond that ‘or’. =“Careful, Daddy!” Alice cried in a loud whisper, hearing my footsteps. — Ты его спугнешь.=“You’ll frighten it.” =I caught Alice by the arm. Передо мной растворялся в воздухе голубой силуэт.=Before me, a blue silhouette dissolved in air. =“Daddy, what have you done! Ведь я его чуть не спасла.=You see, I almost saved it.” Алиса позорно ревела,=Alice howled disgracefully пока я нес ее на террасу.=as I carried her back to the verandah. Что это было под яблоней?=What had been under the apple-tree? Галлюцинация?..=A hallucination? =“Why did you do it?” roared Alice. — Ты же обещал…=“You promised me…” — Ничего я не сделал, — отвечал я,=“I’ve done nothing at all,” I answered. — привидений не бывает.=“There aren’t any spectres.” =“You saw him yourself, you did. =Why are you telling me a lie? =And, you see, he can’t bear any movement of the air. Разве ты не понимаешь, что к нему надо медленно подходить,=Honestly, don’t you realize you have to approach him slowly, чтобы его ветром не сдуло?=so a breeze doesn’t blow on him?” =I did not know what to answer. В одном был уверен: =One thing I was sure of. как только Алиса заснет, выйду с фонарем в сад и обыщу его.=As soon as Alice went to sleep, I was going into the garden to search it with a pocket torch. =“And he gave me a letter for you. Только я его тебе теперь не дам.=Only I won’t give it to you now.” — Не дам.=“I won’t give it to you.” =Then I noticed the piece of paper crumpled up in her fist. Алиса посмотрела на меня, я на нее, =Alice looked at me, and I at her. и потом она все-таки дала мне этот листок.=And, just the same, she finally gave it to me. =On the paper, in my handwriting, was the feeding time-table for red krumci. Я этот листок искал уже три дня.=I’d been looking for it for three days. — Алиса, где ты нашла мою записку?=“Alice, where did you find my time-table?” =“You turn it over. У привидения бумаги не было,=The spectre didn’t have any paper, и я ему дала твою.=so I gave him yours.” На обратной стороне незнакомым почерком было написано по-английски:=On the reverse side, something was written in English, but I did not recognize the handwriting. «Уважаемый профессор!=“My dear Professor, Я беру на себя смелость обратиться к Вам,=“I make bold to apply to you, ибо попал в неприятное положение,=because I have fallen into a very unpleasant predicament из которого не могу выйти без посторонней помощи. =which I cannot get out of without outside help. К сожалению, я не могу также и покинуть круг радиусом в один метр,=Unfortunately, I also cannot leave this circle with a radius of one metre, центром которого является яблоня.=the centre being the apple-tree. Увидеть же меня в моем жалком положении можно только в темноте.=Only in darkness can I be seen in my pitiful predicament. Благодаря Вашей дочери, чуткому и отзывчивому существу,=“Thanks to your daughter, a sensitive and responsive creature, мне удалось наконец установить связь с внешним миром.=I have finally been able to make contact with the outer world. =“I, Professor Kuraki, am the victim of an unsuccessful experiment. Я ставил опыты по передаче вещества на далекие расстояния. =I carried out experiments in the physical transmigration of living matter over great distances. Мне удалось переправить из Токио в Париж двух индюшек и кошку. =I managed to invisibly transmit two dematerialized turkeys and a cat from Tokyo to Paris. Они были благополучно приняты моими коллегами. =They were safely materialized by my colleagues. Однако в тот день, когда я решил проверить эксперимент на себе,=However, on the particular day I decided to make the experiment on myself, пробки в лаборатории перегорели как раз во время эксперимента,=the fuses burnt out in the laboratory right in the middle of the experiment. и энергии для перемещения оказалось недостаточно. =There was not sufficient energy to complete it. Я рассеялся в пространстве, =I had melted away into space, причем моя наиболее концентрированная часть находится в районе Вашей уважаемой дачи. =but the more concentrated part of my body slightly materialized in the area of your cottage. В таком прискорбном состоянии я нахожусь уже вторую неделю, =I have been in this situation for two weeks, и, без сомнения, меня считают погибшим.=and am doubtless considered dead. Умоляю Вас, немедленно по получении моего письма пошлите телеграмму в Токио. =“Upon receiving my letter, I beg you to send a telegram to Tokyo immediately. Пусть кто-нибудь починит пробки в моей лаборатории. =Let somebody fix the fuses in my laboratory. Тогда я смогу материализоваться.=Then I shall fully materialize. Заранее благодарный Кураки».=“Thanking you in advance, Kuraki.” Я долго вглядывался в темноту под яблоней. =I stared for a long time into the darkness under the apple-tree. Потом спустился с террасы, подошел поближе. =Then I left the verandah and approached the tree. Бледно-голубое, еле различимое сияние покачивалось у ствола.=A pale-blue, scarcely observable glow swayed round the trunk. Приглядевшись, я различил очертания человека. =Looking closer, I discerned the outlines of a man. «Привидение» умоляюще, как мне показалось, вздымало к небу руки.=It seemed to me that the ‘Spectre’ raised his hands in supplication to the heavens. Больше я не стал терять время. =I wasted no more time. Я добежал до монорельса и со станции провидеофонил в Токио.=I ran to the monorail stop and videophoned Tokyo from the station. Вся эта операция заняла десять минут.=All this took about ten minutes. Уже на пути домой я вспомнил, что забыл уложить Алису. =Only on the way back did I remember that I had forgotten to put Alice to bed. Я прибавил шагу.=I quickened my steps. Свет на террасе не был потушен.=The verandah light was on. Там Алиса демонстрировала свой гербарий и коллекцию бабочек=Alice was showing her herbarium and butterfly collection невысокому изможденному японцу.=to a short, emaciated Japanese. Японец держал в руках кастрюльку=He was holding a pot и деликатно ел манную кашу,=and delicately eating the left-over farina, не сводя глаз с Алисиных сокровищ.=not taking his eyes off Alice’s treasures. Увидев меня, гость низко поклонился и сказал:=Seeing me, the guest bowed low and said: — Я — профессор Кураки, ваш вечный слуга. =“I’m Professor Kuraki, your eternal servant. Вы и ваша дочь спасли мне жизнь.=You and your daughter have saved my life.” — Да, папа, это мой привидение, — сказала Алиса. =“Yes, Daddy. This is my spectre,” said Alice. — Теперь ты в них веришь?=“Now, do you believe in them?” — Верю, — ответил я. =“I do,” I answered. — Очень приятно познакомиться.=“Awfully glad to make your acquaintance.” Глава 7=Chapter 6 Пропавшие гости =MISSING VISITORS FROM SPACE Подготовка к встрече лабуцильцев проходила торжественно. =Preparations were proceeding for the triumphant reception of the Labutsiltsians. Еще ни разу Солнечную систему не посещали гости со столь далекой звезды.=Never before had the solar system been visited by travellers from such a distant star. Первой сигналы лабуцильцев приняла станция на Плутоне, =The first signals of their approach had been picked up on Pluto, а через три дня связь с ними установила Лондельская радиообсерватория.=and in three days’ time communications were established by the radio observatory at Londel. Лабуцильцы были еще далеко, =The Labutsiltsians were still far away, но космодром Шереметьево-4 был полностью готов к их приему. =but the cosmodrome Sheremetyevo-4 was in full readiness to receive them. Девушки из оранжереи «Красная роза» украсили его гирляндами цветов, =Girls from the ‘Red Rose’ Factory had decorated it with flower garlands, а слушатели Высших поэтических курсов отрепетировали музыкально-литературный монтаж. =and students of the Postgraduate Courses for Poets were rehearsing a musical-literary programme. Все посольства забронировали места на трибунах, =All the embassies had reserved viewing stands on the tiered reception platform. и корреспонденты ночевали в буфете космодрома.=Correspondents stayed overnight in the cosmodrome canteen. Алиса жила неподалеку, на даче во Внукове, и собирала гербарий. =Alice lived not far away in the cottage at Vnukovo, where she was collecting plants for her herbarium. Она хотела собрать гербарий лучше, чем собрал Ваня Шпиц из старшей группы. =She wanted a better one than Vanya Shpits’s — he was in a senior group at her kindergarten. Таким образом, Алиса не принимала участия в подготовке торжественной встречи. =So Alice took no part in the preparations for the triumphant reception. Она даже ничего не знала о ней.=She did not even know about it. Да и я сам к встрече не имел прямого отношения. =And I myself had no direct relation to it. Моя работа начнется потом,=My work would begin later, когда лабуцильцы приземлятся.=after the Labutsiltsians landed. А тем временем события развивались следующим образом.=Meanwhile, events ran as follows. 8 марта лабуцильцы сообщили,=On March 8, the Labutsiltsians advised что выходят на круговую орбиту.=that they were entering into circular orbit. Примерно в это время и произошла трагическая случайность. =Almost simultaneously the tragedy occurred. Вместо лабуцильского корабля=Instead of the Labutsiltsian ship, станции наведения засекли шведский спутник «Нобель-29»,=the radar station intersected the Swedish satellite ‘Nobel-29’ потерянный два года назад.=which was lost two years ago. Когда же ошибка была обнаружена,=By the time the mistake was discovered, оказалось, что лабуцильский корабль исчез. =it turned out that the Labutsiltsian ship had vanished. Он уже пошел на посадку, и связь с ним временно прервалась.=It was making a landing when contact was temporarily broken off. 9 марта в 6.33 лабуцильцы сообщили,=On March 9, at 6.33 a.m. the Labutsiltsians advised что произвели посадку в районе=that they had landed in an area 55°20? северной широты=of 55°20’ latitude North и 37°40? восточной долготы=and 37°40’ longitude East по земной системе координат,=according to the terrestrial system of coordinates, с возможной ошибкой в 15', =with a possible error of 15 minutes то есть неподалеку от Москвы.=— that is, not far from Moscow. В дальнейшем связь прервалась,=Further contact was interrupted и восстановить ее не удавалось,=and not restored, за исключением одного случая,=with the exception of one instance о котором я скажу потом.=which I will return to later. Оказывается, земная радиация пагубным образом воздействовала на приборы лабуцильцев.=It seemed that terrestrial radiation had a deadly effect upon the Labutsiltsian communications system. В тот же момент сотни машин и тысячи людей бросились в район посадки гостей. =At the same moment, hundreds of cars and thousands of people were hurrying to the visitors’ landing-site. Дороги были забиты желающими найти лабуцильцев. =The roads were packed with people hoping to find them. Космодром Шереметьево-4 опустел. =The cosmodrome Sheremetyevo-4 was deserted: В буфете не осталось ни одного корреспондента. =not one reporter remained in the canteen. Небо Подмосковья было увешано вертолетами, винтокрылами,=The sky over Moscow was covered with hovercraft, helicopters, prop-wing, орнитоптерами, вихрелетами=ornithopters and vortex-skimmers и прочими летательными аппаратами.=— all kinds of flying machines. Казалось, тучи громадных комаров нависли над землей.=It looked as if a monstrous swarm of mosquitoes hung over the earth. Если бы даже корабль лабуцильцев ушел под землю,=Even if the Labutsiltsian ship had gone underground, его все равно обнаружили бы.=it would have been found all the same. Но его не нашли.=But it was not found. Ни один из местных жителей не видел,=Not one local inhabitant had seen как спускался корабль.=the ship come down. А это тем более странно,=And the strangest thing of all was потому что в те часы=that at the time почти все жители Москвы и Подмосковья смотрели в небо.=almost every resident of Moscow and its suburbs was watching the sky. Значит, произошла ошибка.=That surely meant a mistake had been made. К вечеру, когда я вернулся с работы на дачу,=By evening, as I was going to the cottage from work, вся нормальная жизнь планеты была нарушена.=all normal everyday life on Earth was fairly disrupted. Люди боялись, не случилось ли чего-нибудь с гостями.=People were afraid something had happened to the visitors. — Может быть,=“Perhaps,” — спорили в монорельсе,=they argued on the monorail train — они из антивещества=“they are made of anti-matter и при входе в земную атмосферу испарились?=and evaporated on entering the Earth’s atmosphere?” — Без вспышки, бесследно? Чепуха!=“Without an explosion, without leaving a trace? Nonsense!” — Но много ли мы знаем о свойствах антивещества?=“But how much do we know of the properties of anti-matter?” — А кто тогда радировал, что совершил посадку?=“Then who sent the radio message that a landing had been made?” — Может быть, шутник?=“Maybe some joker?” — Ничего себе шутник! =“Not bad for a joker! Так, может быть, он и с Плутоном разговаривал?=So you think, perhaps it was he who was talking with Pluto?” — А может быть, они невидимы?=“But perhaps they’re invisible?” — Все равно их обнаружили бы приборы…=“Even so, our locators would have found them…” Но все-таки версия о невидимости гостей завоевывала все больше сторонников…=Nevertheless, the version of invisible guests won the majority of supporters. Я сидел на веранде и думал: =I sat on the verandah, thinking it over. а может, они приземлились рядом, на соседнем поле? =What if they had landed right beside us, on the neighbouring field? Стоят сейчас, бедные, рядом со своим кораблем и удивляются,=Now, poor things, they were standing by their ship wondering почему это люди не хотят обращать на них внимания.=why people wanted to ignore them. Вот-вот обидятся и улетят… =And were on the point of taking offence and flying off… Я хотел было уже спуститься вниз=I was ready to leave the verandah и отправиться на то самое поле,=and head for that very field, как увидел цепочку людей, выходящих из леса.=when I saw a string of people coming out of the woods. Это были жители соседних дач. =They lived in neighbouring cottages. Они держались за руки,=They were holding hands будто играли в детскую игру=as if playing the children’s game «каравай, каравай, кого хочешь выбирай».=‘The Farmer in the Dell, The Farmer Takes a Wife’, Только они были не в круге, а растянулись в линию.=except they weren’t in a circle, but spread out. Я понял, что соседи предугадали мои мысли=I realized my neighbours had outguessed my thoughts, и ищут на ощупь невидимых гостей.=and were searching for the invisible visitors from space by the sense of touch. И в этот момент внезапно заговорили все радиостанции мира.=And at that moment all the radio stations in the world suddenly burst into a thousand tongues. Они передавали запись сообщения,=They were broadcasting a taped communique пойманного радиолюбителем из Северной Австралии.=picked up by an amateur radio station in northern Australia. В сообщении повторялись координаты и затем следовали слова: =The communique repeated the same longitude and latitude as before, followed by these words: «Находимся в лесу… =“We are in a forest… Выслали первую группу на поиски людей. =Sent out the first group to search for people. Продолжаем принимать ваши передачи. =We are tuned in to your broadcasts. Удивлены отсутствием контактов…» =There is a surprising lack of contact…” На этом связь оборвалась.=At that point, communication broke off. Версия о невидимости немедленно приобрела еще несколько миллионов сторонников.=The version of invisibility immediately gained a few more millions of supporters. С террасы мне было видно, как цепочка дачников остановилась=From the verandah I could see the chain of cottagers stop, и затем снова повернула к лесу.=and then swing toward the woods. И в этот момент на террасу поднялась Алиса=And at that moment Alice came up the verandah steps с корзинкой земляники в руке.=carrying a basketful of wild strawberries. — Зачем они все бегают? — спросила она, не поздоровавшись.=“Why are they all running about?” she asked, not bothering to say ‘hello’. — Кто «они»? =“Who do you mean by ‘they’? Надо говорить «здравствуй»,=And you should say ‘Hello’ если не видела с утра своего единственного отца.=when you haven’t seen your one and only father since morning.” — С вечера. =“Since last night. Я спала, когда ты уехал. =I was still asleep when you left this morning. Здравствуй, папа. =Hi, Daddy. А что случилось?=But what’s going on?” — Лабуцильцы потерялись, — ответил я.=“The Labutsiltsians are lost,” I answered. — Я их не знаю.=“I don’t know them.” — Их никто еще не знает.=“Nobody does, so far…” — А как же они тогда потерялись?=“So how did they get lost then?” — Летели на Землю. =“They were flying to Earth. Прилетели и потерялись.=Landed, and disappeared. ” Я чувствовал, что говорю ерунду. =I felt as if I were talking nonsense. Но ведь это была чистая правда.=But it was the simple truth, you see. Алиса взглянула на меня с подозрением:=Alice glanced at me with suspicion. — А разве так бывает?=“But do things like that really happen?” — Нет, не бывает. Обычно не бывает.=“No, they don’t. Not usually.” — А они космодрома не нашли?=“But couldn’t they find the cosmodrome?” — Наверно.=“I guess not.” — И где они потерялись?=“And where, exactly, did they get lost?” — Где-то под Москвой. =“Somewhere near Moscow. Может быть, и неподалеку отсюда.=Perhaps, not far from our cottage.” — И их ищут на вертолетах и пешком?=“And people are looking for them by helicopter and on foot?” — Да.=“That’s right.” — А почему они не придут сами?=“But why don’t they come to us themselves?” — Наверно, они ждут, пока к ним придут люди. =“Probably they’re waiting till people come to them. Ведь они первый раз на Земле. =You see, it’s their first visit to Earth, Вот и не отходят от корабля.=so they don’t want to leave their spaceship.” Алиса помолчала,=Alice was silent, будто удовлетворенная моим ответом.=as if satisfied with my answers. Прошлась раза два по террасе, =She walked along the verandah once or twice, не выпуская из рук корзиночки с земляникой.=without letting go of the basket of strawberries. Потом спросила:=Then she spoke. — А они в поле или в лесу?=“Are they in the fields or the woods?” — В лесу.=“In the woods.” — А откуда ты знаешь?=“And how do you know?” — Они сами сказали. По радио.=“They said so themselves. Over the radio.” — Вот хорошо.=“That’s good.” — Что хорошо?=“What’s good?” — Что они не в поле.=“That they’re not in the fields.” — Почему?=“Why do you say that?” — Я испугалась, что я их видела.=“I was afraid I’d seen them.” — Как так?!=“What’s that again?” — Да никак, я пошутила…=“Why nothing, I was joking.” Я вскочил со стула. =I leaped to my feet. Вообще-то Алиса большая выдумщица…=Alice can tell some regular whoppers at times… — Я не ходила в лес, папа. =“I didn’t go into the woods, Daddy. Честное слово, не ходила. =Honestly, I didn’t. Я была на полянке. =I was in a clearing. Значит, я не их видела.=So I didn’t see them.” — Алиса, выкладывай все, что знаешь. =“Alice, tell me everything, everything you know. И ничего от себя не добавляй. =And don’t add any embroidery of your own. Ты видела в лесу странных… людей?=Did you see in the woods any queer … people?” — Честное слово, я не была в лесу.=“Honestly, I wasn’t in the woods.” — Ну хорошо, на поляне.=“Well, all right, in the clearing then.” — Я ничего плохого не сделала. =“I didn’t do anything wrong. И они вовсе не странные.=And they weren’t queer at all.” — Да ответь ты по-человечески: =“Now, you give me a straight answer. где и кого ты видела? =Where was it, and whom did you see? Не мучай меня и все человечество в моем лице!=Don’t torture me, and all mankind in my person!” — А ты человечество?..=“And are you mankind?” — Послушай, Алиса…=“Listen, Alice…” — Ну ладно. =“Well, all right. Они здесь. =Here they are. Они пришли со мной.=They came with me.” Я невольно оглянулся. =I unwittingly looked around. Терраса была пуста. =The verandah was empty. И если не считать ворчливого шмеля,=And if you didn’t count a buzzing bee, никого, кроме нас с Алисой, на ней не было.=nobody was on it but Alice and me. — Да нет, ты не там смотришь, =“No, no, Daddy. That isn’t the place to look.” — Алиса вздохнула, подошла ко мне поближе и сказала: =Alice sighed, and came over beside me. — Я их хотела оставить себе. =“I wanted to keep them for myself. Я же не знала, что человечество их ищет.=I didn’t know mankind was looking for them.” И она протянула корзинку с земляникой. =And Alice offered me the basket of wild strawberries. Она поднесла мне корзиночку к самым глазам, =She raised the basket right up to my eyes и я, сам себе не веря,=and I, in complete unbelief, ясно разглядел две фигурки в скафандрах.=could clearly make out two little figures in space-suits. Они были измазаны земляничным соком=They were covered with strawberry juice, и сидели, оседлав вдвоем одну ягоду.=both sitting astride the same berry. — Я им не делала больно, — сказала Алиса виноватым голосом. =“I didn’t hurt them,” said Alice, in a guilty voice. — Я думала, что они гномики из сказки.=“I thought they were gnomes from fairyland.” Но я уже не слушал ее. =But I wasn’t listening to her now. Нежно прижимая корзиночку к сердцу,=Tenderly holding the basket next to my heart, я мчался к видеофону=I dashed to the videophone, и думал, что трава для них должна была показаться высоким лесом.=thinking that grass to them must have looked like a great forest. Так состоялась первая встреча с лабуцильцами.=That was how we first met the Labutsiltsians. Глава 7=Chapter 7 Свой человек в прошлом =OUR MAN IN THE PAST Испытание машины времени проводилось в Малом зале Дома ученых. =The time machine test was to take place in the small auditorium at the House of Sciences. Я зашел за Алисой в детский сад, =I had gone to pick up Alice at the kindergarten, а там обнаружил,=and only then realized что, если поведу ее домой,=that if I saw her home опоздаю на испытание.=I should be late for the test. Поэтому я взял с Алисы клятву, что она будет себя вести достойно, =So I made Alice promise faithfully to be on her best behaviour, и мы пошли в Дом ученых.=and we went to the House of Sciences. Представитель Института времени,=The lecturer from the Time Institute, очень большой и очень лысый человек,=very large and very bald, стоял перед машиной времени=stood before the time machine и объяснял научной общественности ее устройство. =explaining its design to the scientific-minded audience, Научная общественность внимательно слушала его.=who listened with all attention. — Первый опыт, как вы все знаете, был неудачен,=“The first experiment, as you all know, was a failure,” — говорил он.=he said. — Посланный нами котенок попал в начало двадцатого века =“The kitten we sent materialized in the beginning of the twentieth century и взорвался в районе реки Тунгуски, =and exploded in the region of the River Tunguska, что положило начало легенде о Тунгусском метеорите. =giving birth to the legend of the Tunguska meteorite. С тех пор мы не знали крупных неудач. =Since that time we have had no serious failures. Правда, в силу определенных закономерностей, =True, in conformity with certain regularities с которыми желающие могут познакомиться в брошюре нашего института, =— anyone interested may acquaint himself with them by reading the brochures of our institute пока мы можем посылать людей и предметы только в семидесятые годы двадцатого века. =— we can, up to the present, send people and objects only as far back as the seventies of the twentieth century. Надо сказать,=I should like to point out что некоторые из наших сотрудников побывали там,=that several of our working colleagues have been there, разумеется, совершенно тайно, =in absolute secrecy of course, и благополучно возвратились обратно. =and returned safely. Сама процедура перемещения во времени сравнительно несложна, =The procedure itself of transference through time is comparatively simple, хотя за ней скрывается многолетний труд сотен людей. =though many years of work done by hundreds of people lie behind it. Достаточно надеть на себя хронокинный пояс… =All one has to do is don this chromocine belt… Я хотел бы, чтобы ко мне поднялся доброволец из зала, =I should like a volunteer to come up from the audience, и я покажу на нем порядок подготовки путешественника во времени…=and I shall demonstrate the method of preparing a traveller through time. Наступило неловкое молчание. =There was an awkward silence. Никто не решался первым выйти на сцену. =Nobody could bring himself to be the first to mount the platform. И тут, разумеется, на сцене появилась Алиса, =At this point, as you might expect, Alice appeared on the stage. которая только пять минут назад поклялась вести себя достойно.=Alice! Who had promised five minutes earlier to be well-behaved. — Алиса, — крикнул я, — немедленно вернись!=“Alice,” I cried out. “Come back at once.” — Не беспокойтесь,=“Don’t worry,” — сказал представитель института,=said the lecturer. — с ребенком ничего не случится.=“Nothing will happen to the child.” — Со мной ничего не случится, папа! — весело сказала Алиса.=“Nothing will happen to me, Daddy!” cried Alice merrily. В зале засмеялись =All the audience began to laugh, и начали оборачиваться, ища глазами строгого отца.=and crane their necks to search for the stern father. Я сделал вид, что совершенно ни при чем.=I pretended it had nothing to do with me. Представитель института надел на Алису пояс, =The lecturer fastened the belt on Alice прикрепил к вискам что-то вроде наушников.=and attached something resembling ear-phones to her temples. — Вот и все, — сказал он. =“That’s all there is to it,” he said. — Теперь человек готов к путешествию во времени. =“Now the person is ready to travel through time. Стоит ему войти в кабину, как он окажется в тысяча девятьсот семьдесят пятом году.=He has only to enter the cabin, and he’ll find himself in the year 1975.” «Что он говорит!=What did he have to say that for! — мелькнула у меня в мозгу паническая мысль.=And a feeling of panic drowned my thoughts. — Ведь Алиса немедленно воспользуется этой возможностью!»=Alice won’t pass that chance up! Но было поздно.=But it was too late to warn him. — Куда ты, девочка? Остановись!=“Where are you going, child? Stop!” — крикнул представитель института.=cried the lecturer. Алиса уже вошла в кабину =But Alice was already in the cabin, и на глазах у всего зала испарилась. =and right before the eyes of the audience — vanished. Зал хором ахнул.=They all gasped in unison. Побледневший представитель института размахивал руками, пытаясь унять шум. =Turning pale, the lecturer waved his arms in an attempt to quiet the uproar. И, видя, что я бегу к нему по проходу,=Seeing me running up the aisle, заговорил, склонившись к самому микрофону,=he grabbed the mike чтобы было слышнее:=in order to be heard. — С ребенком ничего не случится. =“Nothing will happen to the child. Через три минуты он окажется снова в этом зале. =In three minutes, she will again be with us. Я даю слово, что аппаратура совершенно надежна и испытана! =I give you my word, the machine is absolutely safe and has come through every test. Не волнуйтесь!=Please don’t be alarmed!” Ему хорошо было рассуждать. =It was all very well for him to be so sure. А я стоял на сцене=But I stood on the stage и думал о судьбе котенка,=and thought about the fate of the kitten превратившегося в Тунгусский метеорит.=which became the Tunguska meteorite. Я и верил и не верил лектору. =I neither believed nor disbelieved the learned Doctor. Сами посудите =But judge for yourself — знать, что ваш ребенок находится сейчас в отдаленном прошлом… =— how would you feel if you knew that your child was on her way to a hundred years ago in time? … А если она там убежит от машины? =And if she ran away from the machine? Или заблудится?=And got lost? — А нельзя ли мне последовать за ней? — спросил я.=“Is it impossible for me to follow her?” I asked. — Нет. Через минуту… =“Quite impossible. In just a minute… Да вы не беспокойтесь, =Now don’t you worry. там ее встретит наш человек.=You see, our man there will meet her.” — Так там ваш сотрудник?=“You have an associate there?” — Да нет, не сотрудник. =“Not exactly, he’s not quite an associate. Просто мы нашли человека,=Simply we found a man который отлично понял наши проблемы,=who understood our problems perfectly, и вторая кабина стоит у него на квартире. =and a second cabin stands in his flat. Он живет там, в двадцатом веке, =He lives there, in the twentieth century, но в силу своей специальности иногда бывает в будущем.=but because of his special profession…” В этот момент в кабине показалась Алиса. =At that moment, Alice appeared in the cabin. Она вышла на сцену с видом человека,=She came out on the stage with the look of a person который отлично выполнил свой долг.=who has done a good job well. Под мышкой она держала толстую старинную книгу.=And under her arm, she carried a thick, old-fashioned book. — Вот видите, — сказал представитель института.=“There, you see…” began the lecturer. Зал дружно зааплодировал.=The audience gave him a friendly round of applause. — Девочка, расскажи, что ты видела? — сказал лектор,=“Now, little girl, tell us what you saw,” said the Doctor, не давая мне даже подойти к Алисе.=not letting me even approach Alice. — Там очень интересно, — ответила она. =“It’s very interesting back there,” she replied. — Бах! — и я в другой комнате. =“Bam! And I’m in another room. Там сидит за столом дядя и пишет что-то. =A man was sitting at a desk, writing something or other. Он меня спросил: =Then he asked me: «Ты, девочка, из двадцать первого века?» =‘Are you from the twenty-first century, child?’ Я говорю, что наверно, =I said I probably was, только я наш век не считала,=but I couldn’t count to our century потому что еще плохо считаю,=because I can’t count very well yet. я хожу в детский сад, в среднюю группу. =That I only go to kindergarten, and am in the middle or junior group. Дядя сказал, что очень приятно=Then the man said that it was very nice to see me, и что мне придется вернуться обратно.=and that I should have to go back. «Хочешь посмотреть,=‘Would you like to see какая была Москва,=what Moscow was like когда твоего дедушки еще не было?» =before your grandfather was even born?’ — спросил он.=he asked. Я говорю, что хочу. =I said I would. И он мне показал. =And he showed me. Очень удивительный и невысокий город. =A most amazing town … the buildings weren’t very tall. Потом я спросила, как его зовут, =Then I asked him what was his name а он сказал, что Аркадий, =and hi said that was Arkady, и он писатель,=He said that he was a writer и пишет фантастические книжки о будущем.=who wrote science-fiction books about the future. Он, оказывается, не все придумывает, =It seems he doesn’t invent everything, потому что к нему иногда приходят люди из нашего времени=because people from our time visit him и рассказывают о нашей жизни.=and tell him all about it. Только он не может об этом рассказать никому,=Only he mustn’t tell anyone, потому что это страшный секрет.=because it’s terribly secret. Он мне подарил свою книжку… =He gave me a book of his… А потом я вернулась.=And then I came back.” Зал встретил рассказ Алисы бурными аплодисментами.=The audience met Alice’s story with stormy applause. А потом с места поднялся почтенный академик и сказал:=Then a highly esteemed academician stood up and said: — Девочка, вы держите в руках уникальную книгу =“My dear girl, you are holding a very unique book — первое издание фантастического романа «Пятна на Марсе». =— a first edition of the science-fiction novel Spots on Mars. Не могли бы вы подарить мне эту книгу? =Would you mind presenting it to me? Вы все равно еще не умеете читать.=After all, you can’t read yet.” — Нет, — сказала Алиса. =“No, sir,” said Alice. — Я скоро научусь и сама прочту…=“You see, I’ll soon learn to, and then I’ll read it myself.” =Footnotes: Baba-Yaga — a witch in Russian folk tales. — Tr.
